United Voice Members Get Voting Rights in ALP Leadership

Following a decision today, all United Voice members will now have the right to have a direct say in who will lead the ALP in Queensland.  The recent ALP State Conference produced some significant changes in the way the party will now decide its leadership. In a historic move, it was decided that unions would get one third of the vote when it comes to electing the party leader. United Voice members will now be balloted to ask not only who they want leading the ALP but also who they want representing them in their local electorates. Prison To Pay Kylie Muscat For Duration Of Legal Proceedings

Suspended prison officer and United Voice delegate Kylie Muscat will be paid in full for the duration of the legal case taken by the union against her employer GEO. The management company at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre suspended Kylie over two weeks ago after she raised safety concerns in the media. Kylie spoke out about under staffing and other safety issues after one of her colleagues was assaulted at the jail. She was suspended later that day. Continue reading

Help Get Kylie Muscat Reinstated To Her Role

Earlier this week, United Voice delegate and Corrections Officer Kylie Muscat was stood down from her role after raising serious safety concerns about Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre in the media.Last Friday, a colleague of Kylie's was assaulted while at work at Arthur Gorrie. Tensions at the prison have escalated following a significant increase in prisoner numbers, resourcing issues and a smoking ban implemented earlier in the year. Kylie was worried for both her own safety and that of her colleagues, so she spoke to media on Tuesday - with full union backing and support.A few hours later, Kylie was notified by GEO Group - the company managing the prison - that she was being stood down on full pay.
