Delegates Conference Winds Up

Around 40 aged care delegates gathered for a two-day conference in South Brisbane this week, discussing a range of important issues in the sector. Conference sessions covered specific workplace issues, bargaining advice, changes in funding for the sector and more. Some recurring themes were raised by delegates including concern over the the increasing corporatisation of the industry, and how to effectively meet the needs of the elderly with ever-tighter budgets and constraints from management teams.   Continue reading

IPAN National Conference

IPAN - the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network- are holding three events in July.  IPAN is a network of organisations from all regions of Australia who are united by their support for an independent Australian foreign policy based on peaceful resolution of conflicts. Speakers will include Senator Scott Ludlam, Professor Richard Tanter and Professor Kozue Akibayashi who will address why our "Dangerous Allies" are threatening our security and why we need an independent and peaceful national agenda. Jupiters Casino Workers Celebrate Win

Allegations about the treatment of workers at a contract cleaning and housekeeping company have led to Jupiters Casino’s decision to terminate its contract with the provider, in what union United Voice is calling a significant win for casino workers. Jupiters, owned by Echo Entertainment, outsourced housekeeping and cleaning operations to Challenger Cleaning in early 2013. After the union started receiving complaints from housekeepers, stewards and cleaners working for Challenger, United Voice approached Jupiters - who cooperated in investigations into the claims.   Continue reading
