Cleaners rally on wheels

DSC_0043_sm.jpgAround 20 vehicles took part in a recent slow- moving motorcade around Strathpine shopping centre in protest against low wages and poor working conditions for cleaners.

The ‘rally on wheels’ at Westfield mall is part of the Clean Start campaign, which has been running for over a year to get better pay and job security for workers. Westfield cleaners take home just 17 dollars an hour despite the fact they work in extremely profitable shopping centres.

A recent study by United Voice shows cleaners walk an average of 13 kms per shift, while over 90% of them know they do not have enough saved to retire after 65 and over 85% are worried about financial security.
