Share Your Thoughts Ahead of Productivity Commission Review

Tony Abbott has started a major review of the wages of working Australians.

This is a massive review into: “minimum wages, awards and penalty rates, unfair dismissal arrangements, and how employees and employers can bargain with each other”.

This could mean huge changes to pay rates and take home pay, a return to individual agreements, and more.

We need to speak up now and remind the politicians, economists and employers that our work is valuable. We deserve better pay and conditions, not cuts. Already this Productivity Commission is being described as the first step back to WorkChoices.

    We all know it makes sense. It allows businesses to hire more people……….. or it allows businesses to hire the same number of people doing the same amount of work for less money. Hhmm i wonder what they will do?

    Only eat and drink at businesses keeping penalty rates. This is how we fight back

    How about these bloody politicians come and live like the working class live for a month. Make them survive off what the elderly survive off a fortnight. Stop cutting our pays! We (hosp. retail) keep the world spinning. everyone whinges when we don’t have sunday trading or when coles is shut the next day. everyone loses their minds when the shops aren’t open. You guys are seriously asking for a revolt.

    It’s time we were treated with a little more respect. Fuck the CEO’s and the politicians pay rises each year. millions upon millions into your pockets and yet you have the audacity to cut OUR pay? this is an absolute outrage.

    I won’t be working sundays as of now they can shove it or shut shop i don’t give a shit i’ll work saturdays only from now on. NO-ONE SHOULD HAVE TO WORK WEEKENDS LET ALONE THEIR BLDY SUNDAYS

    It is mainly young students and younger people onto their 30 that need this money to survive and that is literally. Policitocian need to stop grabbing out our wages so we can survive normally week to week. I wonder if the even what it was like being a normal person before their big wages .,We all start at the bottom and work up. No their excuses will not work. Some of us have to work weekends and nor by choice. So now we will be exploited and penalised for money grabby government. Let’s see if they could survive 6 months on some of our wages. For goodness sake is it really necessary to kick the little people down when most have been pushed even lower. We will stand united on this and give everything we have got. They are not breaking our spirit .

    Penalty rates are a necessity for those who have to work weekends. It is not normal to work weekends as our governments thinks and of course companies who operate on weekends . Remove penalty rates and no one will want to work weekends. It encroaches on family life, every second weekend we work this means we start at 5am till 6pm from Friday, through to Sunday on Sunday we work from 7am till 8pm this means we miss out our entire weekend being to tired to go out or stay up in the evenings with our families we all miss out on so much quality time with our family to help provide for our families,sports events , grand finals, special events,birthdays, it is not only tough on us as shift workers but effects our families to . I am sure our wonderful politicians work weekends but they are certainly compensated very well and receive many benefits, including their families, I wonder how they would feel having to give up so much of their lives to be advised even though you have a contract we will take away your benefits to save the country ?this just would not happen. Today existence is difficult enough without taking more away from shift workers, we are all trying to pay our way and deserve to have a fair and just system that protects our rights as workers, I work in an industry where weekend work is expected. We have management now claiming that we are no longer shift workers as we don’t work every Sunday yet in fair work Australia we are entitled to be be compensated for 5 weeks a year but our employer has now stopped this only giving us 4 weeks a year, he has now stopped us getting paid for public holidays and this is now a snow ball effect , we are being subjected to abuse, threats and intimidation if we speak up, what happened to Australia being the lucky country!!! we have been threaten to loose our full time positions so he can replace us with casuals that are less qualified and therefore not paying holiday pay, sick pay etc !! and can be laid off if they don’t follow his directions , Its not hard to see the big picture , once he has all the power he can do what every he wants to do to the workers,Abuse of power is what they call it . It is all about greed and power and unfortunately bringing in other nationalities new to Australia who are just thankful to have a job and whom keep telling us just work more overtime to make up the loss of wages and saying at least we have a job, don’t say anything just do as he says…. dare I say they are now supervisors . Why do we have to have our wages stripped away, be abused threatened and intimidated , yet the management that are removing our entitlements, have not handed over their entitlements and reduced their wages for the Organisation , because they think they are entitled to their wages ….., They are rewarded for destroying Organisations and the very backbone of the companies are the WORKERS . Its not rocket science if you treat workers with respect and look after them, meaning not taking away what they have already been entitled too, you get so much more from them, a loyal employee who will go above and beyond. An Organisation or company that has good workplace Management in place can achieve outstanding results. It is not , India or Thailand or Sri Lanka just because they are joining us in Australia does not mean we should have to except less because they are just happy to have a job and work under the radar , we do understand but this is effecting workplace right in Australia and will eventually mess up our Country, not to mention dividing us all so their is now race discrimination in this mix , Against Australian workers believe it or not, ….. We need to stop this discrimination. Say no To the bullies and realize it is abuse at the highest level.MANAGEMENT..if we say no to Domestic Violence Abuse , then we should say no to WORKPLACE abuse…when we have workers under so much stress through bullying and threats that they have suffered a Mental breakdown because of this abuse no one can see these effects, their is no bruises but this impacts on their families and places extra stress on our already overloaded Mental health System…dare I say they ended up sacking him at the worst time possible of his life, someone will end up taking their lives over this continued abuse , they stripped his self worth, now he is on a disability pension, so who is paying for this now….The Australian Tax payers..he wanted to work and was a great team member who new his job and rarely took sick days, I cannot believe politician think this is good… This is why we have people on benefits and our taxes are supporting this behavior .Please pay attention to the big picture .What a disgrace in this day and age…..We have workplace agreements when we started that should not be changed due to bad Management, if they wanted to change the pay rate it should have been changed before they offered people this rate….very unfair workplace practice….. We all need to stick together and fail to support these Organisation and companies, by naming and shaming them……we worked over Christmas , including Christmas day and were all expecting our wages that never came , Our families suffered as they watch us all become up set due to the stress of not receiving our wages , we were lied to and worked ,not getting paid for this.we had all brought gifts for family to compensate the fact they we will not be with our families to enjoy this family event, our credit card took a Hugh hit which left us financially in debt , so we not only missed out being with our families over the Christmas period but did not get the pay we were entitled to , wages with held , promised to be fixed and then refused again , with treats to us,right on Christmas …..As Bob Hawk would have said they are un Australian and these employers that do this to their workers are BUMS…I hope the politician can imagine what this is doing to our country ……….it effects tax payers as a whole in every area…….I have been backed so far in a corner with my work colleagues that we have to now fight or flight…. we wish to defend our rights standing strong against this form of bullying and discrimination…..we receive and witness on a day to day basis…unacceptable , lets start a list of Management workplace abusers…..Lets pray politician hold them accountable.. in my option he should be paying this employees disability pension not tax payers……PLEASE do something about this, we as tax payers rely on you ……. We cannot do this on our own …………please hear our call for help….

    Put yourself in the shoes of people with little job security, trying to rent a decent home for their kids, working long and unsociable hours, but finding time to be with those kids AND sleep. Then decide how much consistent pay YOU would need to achieve this. Empathy from politicians please.

    Stand up for the right to be paid weekend rates. For some of us working in the community or health sector may not be a choice but to provide a service or duty of care to clients on a 24/7 basis.

    Others maybe providing a service say in Hospitality which is a choice.

    But without those people providing a service sacrificing their time away from their loved ones on weekends and public holidays the lifestyle and economic benefits for average townships would be detrimental.

    We don’t all have a choice.. When most are celebrating during downtime for holidays or the slack, that’s when Security and other essential workers are required to protect property from fire, theft and any other wilful damage and I believe that in itself is certainly the small amount of penalty rates paid..

    Weekend penalty is very imperative to because I gave up family time to get more money. I’m a low income earner, so I need weekend penalty rates to survive. Thanks

    For a lot of us that work in hospitality/ shift workers we are already paid a lower wage compared to the average Mon-Fri worker and I know this is the only opportunity I have to make my wages up for the low pay we already receive. This would really cause my family to struggle and means I would have to work extra hours meaning less time with my family during holiday seasons.

    I work for $ 19.00 gross an hour. I give up weekends with my family and friends to earn some decent money so I can make ends meet. Today,s cost of living is so high that I have to put in the w,ends to meet those costs. What does it have to do with the government anyway, we pay our taxes and we stay off the dole ? If theses penalty rates are taken off us then the dole line will be longer and business,s will not be able to give the services that is expected and both parties lose out. If the rate of pay goes upto 27 grs across the board then thats that’s. I don’t work to go backwards !!!!!!!!. Maybe the pollies need to walk in our shoes !!!!!!.

    One of the reasons I chose Hospitality is the flexibility of shifts,the trade off for working weekends and missing out on time with family and friends was worth the extra in penalty rates.If this was to stop I think I will be looking for another industry .Which seems a shame after 22yrs,but I have a family to help support and my ordinary wage without weekend peneltys would be not much more than the dole.     Be cause wages are so low employees have to work weekends to suplement incomes I am sure most employees would rather spend time with family

    This is just another one of Tony Abbotts robbing the poor! People give up their social life with family and friends only because they need the money to meet their bills. This will disadvantage many people. Tony Abbott keeps adding to social problems and the homeless.

    One problem we constantly have with Wilson’s on Nauru is there are always many xpats missing off the rotations and l mean not enough to cover assigned posts and the command are not motivating the locals to task meaning we are working at a constantly hard rate with only one break in 12 hours trying to cover the shortfall. This is also dangerously leaving staff exposed. Wilson’s in the last year and a half l have been here have not rectified this nor have they offered more pay or time in leiu. This l find unacceptable in every way

    Yes, we all elected to work shifts abd if we didn’t like it we could get another job. But who would be doing ours then? Nobody and the whole country would stand still! Is this really what you want Tony?! I don’t think so! In life it’s all about give and take and in this case it means: we GIVE our time we could and would want to spend with our loved ones at weekends, public holidays, night shifts etc. In regards to ‘TAKE’ – the government should therefore appreciate our commitment, efforts and sacrifices and GIVE us the penalties!

    To loose penalty rates on weekends means I have to try and find more work and have no time off weekend penalty rates help financially so I dont have to find more work to make ends meet

    To take away penalty rates and extra allowances in the awards, just proves how out of touch politicians are.Is any one checking on their wage and conditions ?The basic wage should be called the basic disgrace..the pity is that good hard working people are under valued and struggle , when we all should paid fairly , a nation relies on its workforce..

    Please don’t take away my penalty rates. I work afternoon/nights and weekends, this means a lot of time away from my kids. If you took penalty rates away i could not afford the necessities for everyday living.

    I work hard and long hours at a mine site 70 hrs a week and 21 days straight 7 days R&R they don’t pay over time. The public holidays are worked out to so many a year.with this type of work we live on site and get our meals. But we do miss out on family time goes so fast when you go home once a. Month.

    Sorry so tired now after12 hours.
