The union representing prison officers at Queensland’s two private prisons welcomes the State Government’s announcement that the facilities will be brought under public management.
United Voice Queensland President Sharron Caddie said it showed the Government and Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan had listened to the concerns of workers, after increased lobbying efforts.
“This is a great step in the right direction from the Minister, which shows this Government has acknowledged the current situation at our private prisons cannot continue,” Ms Caddie said.
“But what we really need is for the Government to address the serious, and potentially deadly, safety concerns our members have raised at Arthur Gorrie,” she said.
“GEO has got to go, before someone is seriously harmed or killed.
“We will continue to campaign for improved safety and increased staffing levels at the prison until GEO is removed.
“As we have said before, if a serious incident occurs, it is the Minister who will be to blame.”
