Minister for Police and Correctional Services Mark Ryan should concentrate on the real issues of safety in our privately run prisons rather than on mock prison riots.
Minister Ryan needs to step up and deal with the serious issues of overcrowding and officer safety, after a bout of major issues at privately run Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre.
The public and the officers working at the centre haven’t heard boo from Minister Ryan since the ABC 7:30 report aired last week, and United Voice Spokesperson Damien Davie said union members were extremely disappointed.
The recent media reports have exposed shocking accounts of increasing violence, spiking suicides and overcrowding at the privately run facility operated by GEO.
“Overcrowding and violence in prisons, particularly at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, should be the Minister’s focus,” he said.
“There are not enough correctional officers to safely manage Arthur Gorrie.
“It’s an absolute powder keg. The Minister needs to sort out the management there before a staff member is seriously harmed or killed.
“Instead of doing media stunts at other prisons, the Minister needs to front up to the officers at Arthur Gorrie who are risking their lives every single day just to do their jobs.”
