XXXX workers will join hundreds of community supporters to rally for job security and the right to strike at the final State of Origin game, being played on home turf at Milton’s Suncorp Stadium next week.
United Voice Queensland has given notice to XXXX that the workers on shift will take protected industrial action and join the rally. The union is fighting repeated efforts by XXXX to shut down its workers by using a broken system.
United Voice Queensland spokesperson Damien Davie said the recent actions of Lion, with the support of the Fair Work Commission, showed the system was failing workers in favour of big multi-national corporations.
“When the system that is designed to protect workers’ rights can be exploited by a huge, global company, then that system is clearly broken,” Mr Davie said.
“Our brewery workers deserve to maintain good, secure jobs here in Queensland, without the threat of being undercut by a cheaper, casual workforce.
“We’ve been negotiating in good faith since last year, trying to get XXXX to agree to secure the jobs of their permanent employees.
“Workers have taken industrial action nine times in the past few months, and they’re now set to do it again next week.
“It’s ridiculous that workers need to go to these lengths of taking industrial action, just to protect their existing conditions and job security.
“The current system is stacked against workers, which means we need to fight to change the rules.
“With the support of the workers, the union movement, the community and many politicians behind us, we will not stop until we get a fair deal for our brewery workers and fix this broken system.
“XXXX has lied to their workers and they’ve lied to Queenslanders. It’s time for XXXX to do the right thing by workers instead of using the broken system to try and shut them down.”
