XXXX workers at Milton’s brewery will walk off the job for a seventh time in the past seven weeks today, fed up with management’s attempts to gag them rather than securing their jobs and the brewery.
United Voice Queensland spokesperson Damien Davie said it was wrong for management to focus on trying to gag the workers and stop them from taking strike action, rather than simply reaching an agreement.
“Lion is taking us through the Fair Work Commission this week to try and gag us from speaking about their plans for the brewery and their plans for cheaper labour,” Mr Davie said.
“Instead of trying to shut down their workers, why don’t they just come to the bargaining table?
“They still won’t guarantee simple things in the enterprise agreement, but they’re happy to mislead Queenslanders through the media.
“We want it in black and white, in the enterprise agreement, that they will keep the brewery open – at least for the term of the agreement. But they won’t even commit to that.
“Management also won’t put into the agreement that they will pay casual relief workers their full entitlements. It’s clear they want to bring in cheaper labour to undercut their permanent workforce.
“Workers have had enough. We even saw management come out last week saying their own staff don’t deserve to be paid well for the work they do.
“All the while, the head of the brewery is taking home a fat pay check and Lion is delivering huge profits while paying minimal tax.
“It’s just not right. It’s about time XXXX took this seriously, and did the right thing by Queensland.
“We want the brewery to stay, and we want XXXX to put pen to paper to commit to that.
“What have they got to hide?”
