The fight for job security for workers at Milton’s XXXX Brewery has gone national, with Australian Council of Trade Unions Secretary Sally McManus to address a community rally being held at the brewery on Wednesday morning.
Workers will strike for a 9th time, which comes after the brewery’s parent company, Japanese beer giant Lion, was caught out in an embarrassing public lie over where their beer is brewed.
The union representing XXXX workers has called for a boycott of the 330mL cans of XXXX Gold that are brewed in New South Wales and South Australia and secretly being shipped over the border for sale in Queensland bottle shops.
United Voice Queensland spokesperson Damien Davie said the national and international support for XXXX workers and the Milton brewery had been overwhelming.
“For more than two months now, brewery managers from parent company Lion have lied to their staff and they’ve lied to Queenslanders,”Mr Davie said.
“Workers have had enough, and that’s why the national support they have is so important.
“Sally McManus from the ACTU will be addressing workers after they walk off the job, bringing new life to their fight for jobs they can count on.
“Workers are still waiting for the Fair Work Commission to make a ruling on Lion’s attempts to gag workers, and limit how they can take industrial action.
“Today, workers, with the support of their national colleagues from unions across Australia, will say that’s not good enough.
“When the system allows for a large multinational company like Lion to use their power against workers, it’s time to change the rules.”
